Excerpt:
Dusk settled over Boston's skyline, giving the scudding
clouds a pinkish tinge. It was a sour-smelling, balmy, summer evening. Night was
a scant few minutes away. William Macklin did his best work in darkness.
The red Mustang coupe double-parked in front of the 7-Eleven.
The woman who got out was in her thirties with dark hair, cut in a no-nonsense
wedge. A few minutes later she emerged from the store gripping a package of
cigarettes. William noted her muscular calves visible beneath her knee length
blue skirt. She was perfect.
She glanced at his new black BMW, a slow longing look he'd
seen in so many of their eyes. He wasn't visible behind the tinted glass and he
knew she had no idea she'd been selected. He smiled, thinking about the exciting
night ahead. The smell of leather surrounded him. Life didn't get any better
than this.
The woman's Mustang roared to life and jerked out into the
traffic. William waited a beat, then pulled a few car lengths behind. Tailing
was his specialty. His tingling fingers gripped the wheel. The pursuit always
turned him on, the danger he might be spotted. But, so what? He hadn't done
anything wrong. Yet. As president of Macklin Computers he was connected. Cops
wouldn't dare mess with him.
