A word from the author of the self-help chapter book series written for
young children.
Developing positive, productive relationships is an essential element in the
success equation for people of all ages. Success with people is an important
prerequisite to success in other areas of one's life. Unfortunately, limited
attention is typically given to systematically teaching young children the
cognitive content and skill set required to achieve interpersonal excellence.
Instruction for young children in this area is primarily exception based.
They receive explicit instruction only when their behavior is perceived, by
adults, to be inappropriate or unacceptable. They are then "taught"
what they should not do and what they need to do to conform to adult
expectations and requirements. Beyond that, though, they are largely
on-their-own in the interpersonal arena.
When children reach adolescence, adult interest in their interpersonal
choices sharply increases and is often intense. Adults become keenly interested
in the young person's relationships and equally interested in providing advice
and guidance to the adolescent through discussion, one-on-one lectures,
classroom lessons, articles, books, and through any other potentially open
channel. Some of this educational effort is successful but much of it is
not.
The factors that limit the effectiveness of interpersonal education for teens
are varied but stem largely from a simple, underlying issue. Just as the primary
developmental emphasis on emotional development is when children are three to
five-years-old, the primary developmental emphasis on social (interpersonal)
development is when children are in elementary school. By the time they reach
adolescence, their core interpersonal knowledge and skills have already
developed. What's more, they developed when the children were largely
on-their-own in the interpersonal arena.
The Friend Factory, The Yes Bank, and The Success Train
are written to be synchronous with the interpersonal development of young
children. The elementary school years are the optimal time for children to
acquire the requisite knowledge and skills needed to succeed on their journey to
interpersonal excellence.
Marissa and I want to thank Patti-Jo Burtnett for developing this teacher's
guide and for making the lesson plans and other teaching materials available in
such a teacher-friendly format. When combined with the three books in the
series, they are a powerful set of tools for use when teaching young children
what they must know to achieve interpersonal excellence. Thanks are likewise
extended to Sharolett Koenig, President of Koenisha Publications, for her
enthusiastic support of The Leadership Shop series and this teacher's guide.
Marissa and I also want to thank you for your interest in The Leadership
Shop. More importantly, we want to thank you for focusing your professional
time and effort on the life-critical task of teaching young children how to
succeed on their journey toward interpersonal excellence.
