MY LIFE IN BITS 'N' PIECES
by Gene Key
An autobiography with an unstoppable southern wit
ISBN 0-9700458-4-0 (387 pages) $21.95
Jacket Blurb:
A collection of history, poems, and short stories, My
Life In Bits 'N' Pieces is a jigsaw puzzle of writings and never-before
published photographs. Born Imogene Fay Underwood on July 28, 1921, Gene Key
has seen and written about some of our nation's most devastating, as well
as, most triumphant times in history. She writes about raising children,
having raised seven of her own as a single parent. She writes about loving
and losing, having experienced both. She writes about the major wars in our
country's recent past. She writes her views on life, having lived not always
as she should've, but always to the fullest.
Gene's witty narrative style reflects a rich
heritage of southern upbringing. My Life In Bits 'N' Pieces tells the
story of brothers who became divided between the Union and the Confederacy
sides of The Civil War, and the one who died a prisoner at Andersonville.
You'll also read about families who struggled to stay together during hard
times. You'll discover Gene's "distant" connection to one of our
past presidents. And Gene shares with you the many milestones in her life,
including high school graduation at the head of her class at the age of
fifty-seven.

Author Biography:
At a time in life when most people begin to slow down and
enjoy their golden years, GENE KEY is just getting started. Her first
memories are of searching for and treasuring pencil stubs so she could
write. Gene Key lives in western Michigan with her cat named Dawg, where she
has resided in the same house for over thirty years. Next to her writing,
her favorite pastime is gardening. Her love for trees and flowers prompted
her to rid her yard of nearly all grass, eliminating the need to mow it, a
benefit that modern gardeners are only now discovering.

Excerpt:
I'm not sure why I got up this morning thinking about snow. It
may have something to do with the fact that my car has not been out of my
driveway since Wednesday night, or it might be the weather forecast on TV
that says we have over twelve inches of snow on the ground and a possibility
of up to six inches more today. Something got my attention and I began to
think about snow!
It is so totally beautiful to me. It hides a lot of
wintertime ugliness. And it comes in a number of different vehicles. These
last three or four days, it has arrived on little furry kitty cat paws. Just
as quiet as a mouse.
But sometimes, when there are little sleet-balls
mixed in, it hammers on the windows like small firecrackers exploding in the
distance. The sound of it puts a chill in your body, even if the house is
warm. This snow usually comes in on a brisk wind vehicle.
Then there is the snow that rides in on what is
called flurries. It is deposited on my patio and before I've finished
admiring its beauty, another flurry rushes in, grabs it up and takes MY snow
over into the neighbor's yard or across the street or who knows where it was
taken. Now I'm back to a nearly clean patio. Bummer! But not to worry, the
flurries are not finished for today--or this week--or the winter of '96.
I've a feeling there will be lots more snow before warm weather arrives.
It's here for a purpose, but beware. You must check
what vehicle it's arriving on before you plan your activities for the day.
Being dressed properly is of great importance if you mean to enjoy this most
beautiful time of the year.
God sends it. We need it. So I say, LET IT SNOW!
