LAKE OF SPIES
by Sherri Bigbee and Steve Hicok

A Chase Brandon espionage novel
ISBN 0-9700458-8-3 (393 pages) $21.95

Jacket Blurb:
The assignment: to bring in Godenov, a Russian assassin. But before Chase Brandon can strike a deal, the mark is killed by his own backup. And Brandon ends up saving the life of a young New Jersey detective who knows too much. Brandon, the lone agent who has spent most of his life not developing meaningful relationships with the people he comes in contact with, must find out why Jenny Lathrop is the target of Gerald Penworth, the ruthless billionaire who is rapidly gaining world dominance by offering assistance in the wake of 9-11 and the resultant terrorist threat. What Jenny knows is the connection between a new, horrible disease that is spreading like wildfire across the world and the money and power of the PenCorp empire. When the situation becomes too widespread for one agent to handle, Brandon calls into action the help of C 2-4's retired agents who must mount an attack in ten key cities across America to bring the deadly rampage to an end.

Excerpt from Chapter 7:
She had to do it in a tunnel. It was her only hope; otherwise the car might topple into the lake, trapping her in a watery grave. Brandon's car rounded a beach cove, he could see the road disappear into the cliff for three hundred feet.
He sped up trying to catch them, certain she'd try it now. He closed the distance in the tunnel, windows rolled down so he could hear. Lights off, he'd hold back. Out the window he heard howling currents of air and then the screech. This was it. She was taking action on her own.
He hit his headlights. Ahead there was something small, orangish. It floated to the side and went out like a dying meteor in the black air. It was the brake lights.
Brandon thought the car had gone into the side of the tunnel knocking the lights out. But, no, it kept going. He caught up and pulled ahead. He was coming to the end of the tunnel. He tried to see her in the rear view mirror. It was obvious that the car's rate of speed had sharply decreased. Somewhere, back in the darkness, his friend was fighting for her life.
